Good Luck Wisconsin Rapids Wrestlers

Note: watch the Wisconsin Rapids wrestling match LIVE tonight starting at 7:30 on the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune website.

It’s been a good month for our high school wrestlers. They started off with a strong performance at The Clash, going 4-2 and finishing in 9th place.

Two weeks ago they hosted the Rapids Quad which included Ellsworth WI, Totino Grace MN, and Glenbard North IL. Rapids breezed to victories over TotinoGrace (51-12) and Ellsworth (49-14) before beating a tough Glenbard North wresting team (29-27). Watch the matches at BadgerStateWrestling.com.

Last week saw them handily beat Marshfield 47-11.

But next… Oh, have we been waiting for this… It’s Wausau West this Thursday.

1 vs. 2 in the state

22 vs. 23 in the nation

Conference championship at stake

Plus a little confidence heading into team state

It’s all there in this dual. This is what high school athletics is all about. The drive and determination to be the best. To beat the best.

What I’ve loved about Lincoln wrestling is the pride and determination these kids show. They were beat down last year. I’m excited to see what these kids have done to improve, to carry on this tradition… To start a new one…

I was reminded of the tradition that is Wisconsin Rapids wrestling this week on WIWrestling.com.  Someone posted a link to a video of Kevin Black beating Justin Tritz in the semifinals of individual state.

This is the Kevin Black, who had not lost a high school match-who was going for his 4th consecutive state title.

Justin Tritz, who would have walked through his bracket to his first state title. Instead chose to drop down a weight class to take on Black.

A never wavering determination to beat the best, to prove your the best. What more is there?

To quote the final two lines of the Smashing Pumpkins song “Tonight, Tonight:”

The impossible is possible tonight

Believe in me, as I believe in you, tonight

Have faith in your teammates and together the impossible is possible tonight.

Get there early. Not only will their be fans for Wausau West and Wisconsin Rapids but also hundreds of wrestling fans from across the state are coming because the  best in Wisconsin are going toe to toe.

I can’t wait!

Update: watch a short video with Wisconsin Rapids wrestling coach Scott Benitz… thanks to Wis. Rapids Daily Tribune.

Citigroup to Purchase $50 Million Corporate Jet with Bailout Funds

can_anyone_hear_usJumping on my soapbox…

Yes, that is correct… First saw this mentioned by Keith Olbermann a few minutes ago… A quick Google search and I find this article by the New York Post…

How can companies continue to make these selfish purchases?

Is it difficult for a corporate suit to turn a blind eye to their companies troubles? Do they believe they are not in trouble? Or worse, do they think that, we the consumers, will not remember this overwhelming greed they continue to demonstrate?

Millions of people are feeling a financial crush…but because we are not important, or big enough to be bailed out by the government…

We must continue to soldier on…watching helplessly as big business continues to laugh in our faces…

Bill McNamee, who is the head of CitiFlight Inc., which manages Citigroups fleet of planes, was asked to comment, he replies ”Why should I help you when what you write will be used to the detriment of our company?”

“What relevance does it have but to hurt my company?”

So does that mean he has no plausible explanation for why Citigroup decided to purchase this $50 million airplane?

Are their not other things that will affect thousands more people… that can help change the lives of the customers that Citigroup is responsible for…

Yet, another reason to buy local… Help local Wisconsin Rapids businessess. Keep your money in our community.

Stepping quietly off my soapbox…

9 Tips to Eliminate Frozen Plumbing Pipes in Your Wisconsin Rapids Home

frozenpipesLess than a week ago we were faced with wind chills approaching -50. Such extreme temperatures cause concerns for all of us. Mine were:

  • Will my car start?
  • Is my dog going to be safe?
  • Will I be safe?

But also:

  • Will my plumbing pipes freeze?

Their aren’t many things worse than having your plumbing pipes freeze and burst during the winter. On the heals of our frigid previous week I would like to provide you with 9 tips that will eliminate the need for that 2 a.m. phone call to Steve’s Plumbing…

Eliminate cold drafts near water pipes:

  • tightly close doors and windows to the outside
  • install storm windows on basement windows
  • fill cracks in walls and around windows
  • eliminate drafts from crawl spaces

Provide warmth to the water pipes:

  • open the door to the room where the pipes are located to allow warmth to circulate
  • place a lit light bulb near water pipes. But never use open flames
  • wrap pipes in insulation or heat tape
  • if your kitchen sink or bathroom sink are located against an outside wall, insulate the wall and open the cabinet door below sink to allow warm air to reach pipes

Make frequent use of your water supply:

  • when outdoor temperatures remain below zero, it is less expensive to run your faucet regularly than to repair a frozen or bust pipe

Other resources with additional cold weather pointers:

To answer my questions from above:

  • No my car didn’t start on Thursday. Only after it warmed up Friday afternoon we were finally able to get it jump started .
  • Yes, my dog handled the cold. By Friday afternoon he was lying on straw he pulled out of his doghouse enjoying the sun, even though the temperature outside was barely above zero.
  • Yes, I made it through. Thursday I did have to haul wood into the garage from my woodpile. I did wish I had planned that better…

It’s the summer of ‘69…

eating_ice_creamEarlier this week I received an email, and yesterday the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune ran a story that states that the old Herschleb’s Restaurant is available to rent.

Sadly, the diner’s doors have been closed since 2007 after first opening in 1946.

The diner was purchased by Patrick Goodness, owner of The Goodness Company, on December 15, 2008 for $69,000. The original asking price had been $149,000. He has proposed a rental fee of $800 per month, which he says is negotiable.

On a personal note, I would love to see something go in there and become successful. Will that be easy? I very highly doubt it. But for the right person…

I have fond memories of receiving coupons to Herschleb’s for malts on my birthday from, then, Wood County National Bank. Sitting in the back room in the middle of summer with a giant chocolate malt and burger…

Even though I can’t go back to my youth, I hope someone else is able to turn back the clock and find the same success that the original owners had six decades ago. Maybe a new generation of residents will be witness to the creation of an “iconic” Wisconsin Rapids tradition…
