I recently was watching a show on the National Geographic channel that was documenting the rise of facial cancer in Tasmanian Devils. This form of cancer was spreading rapidly throughout the island and in a few short years the number of Tasmanian Devils fell from over 100,000 to less than 30,000.
How could this happen?
Researchers found that this form of cancer was actually being spread from Devil to Devil. The next question was how cancer could be passed from one Devil to another. It was found that the genetic makeup of each Tasmanian Devil throughout the Eastern and Central part of Tasmania (where the majority of cases were found) was so similar, due to heavy inbreeding, that when a cancer cell was passed the new host’s immune system viewed the cancer as its own. And in turn it did not fight the new cells.
The only hope is to use Tasmanian Devils from the Western part of the island to help increase the gene pool, which will stop the spread of facial cancer from one animal to another. They are hopeful that they will be able to turn this around in time.
Linking the Devils Story to Your Real Estate Dilemma
Similar attributes of seemingly unrelated animals has caused each animal to become the same as every other.
This is related to selling your home. How is your home different from the one down the street? Across town? Do you have an answer?
What have you done to separate your home in a buyer’s eye? Curb appeal? Updated kitchen? New hardware? Flooring? Paint?
What is unique about your home that will be memorable to a buyer? If you’re struggling for an answer, what can you do to make your home memorable? It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money either. Maybe it’s decluttering. Staging. Repurposing a room. But you must do something.
There is an abundance of homes for buyers in Wisconsin Rapids to view. This means the buyer is in control. Which puts you, the seller, on the defensive and in a position of having to react.
Your proper reaction is to make your home stand out. Make it memorable. Make it move in ready. Make it something that a new buyer wants to live in.
Your job…
View homes that are in your price range. What similar attributes do they have? Are you lacking in these amenities? How is your home a little bit different? Can you use this to your advantage?
Next, view homes a little above your price range. What do they have that you don’t? Are you able to add that to your home? Obviously you can’t change square footage or location, but most everything else you can.
Do that and you’re on your way to your next home.
